Communication Assessments

Speech-Language Pathologists use parent interviews, observation and formal testing to assess children. For young children, play-based testing procedures are emphasized. Testing areas are determined by referral concerns, and may address articulation, expressive vocabulary and grammar, fluency, oral peripheral structure and function, listening comprehension and recall, social interaction, reading and written communication skills. Assessment results help to determine whether or not a problem exists, relative areas of communication strength and weakness, prognosis for improvement, and goals and procedures for intervention. Language and play work well together

Individual Therapy

Treatment builds skills using focused practice, parent training and home assignments. Age-appropriate games, songs and activities are used to motivate and teach children, especially when they are young. Most are having so much fun, they don’t even realize that they are learning essential skills. Parents are encouraged to observe sessions, ask questions and practice with their child at home. Treatment is offered by Speech-Language Pathologists, or by Communicative Disorders Assistants, who work under the direction of Speech Pathologists at a reduced fee.

Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Thinking and communication changes are one of the most common consequences of a traumatic brain injury. Brain injuries often go unrecognized for some time after an accident. Our Centre can help with assessment and treatment. We were the first community based service in the city, and offer:

  • cognitive-communication assessment for identified or suspected brain injuries
  • individual and group therapy
  • family and teacher education and support
  • case coordination and referral
  • academic tutoring
